Feed17/7/26 - Computers are like dogsI feel like just doing a quick short one today.Some dogs just, for unfathomable reasons, don't like some people. Dogs usually love me, and I love them. But I had one friend when I was in high school whose dog just sat in the corner growling at me whenever I came over. I never worked out why. It seems to me like computers are like this too. Imagine it's the early 2000s, although the same principle applies today. Some people, despite being techy types, just seem to have no end to their computer woes. It always surprised me when people would talk about their regular blue screens. I've always wondered what the point was of that memory test when booting a PC. I have literally never had a memory stick fail - why does ALL the ram have to be checked EVERY time you boot your computer? Back in the day I also never seemed to get malware or viruses, despite my brothers, parents and friends seemingly constantly plagued by them. I regularly ran virus and malware checkers, but took no other precautions - I used Internet Explorer, didn't use a firewall, or any other kind of active protection, and didn't really worry about what websites I visited, what attachments I opened or what programs I downloaded, and I did everything with admin priveleges. Yet the checks never seemed to pick anything up, and my PC always ran perfectly (except on the rare occasion when I did something knowingly stupid). I generally didn't even suffer from the ubiquitous Windows Rot, while everyone else seemed to be reinstalling their system every couple of months because it had ground to a halt. I wasn't a tech guru - I only learned what the registry is in the last few years, when I started getting into retro computing. My only explanation is that computers are like dogs - sometimes they just arbitrarily decide they don't like someone. |
